Galactic and LMC Cepheids and supergiants have been observed at the SAAO in the DDO photometric system. Their comparative properties are studied using de-reddened two-color diagrams with reddening ratios derived from early-type stars. The long period Cepheids in the Galaxy lie above the Ib sequence in the 42-45, 45-48 diagram as expected from their relative luminosities, and the metallicity index delta 3842 indicates that there is little variation of abundance among galactic Cepheids. Reddenings of Cepheids may be obtained from the 42-45 and B-V indices; these so-called 'DDO' reddenings show a systematic trend with period in the same sense as Kraft's do when compared with reddenings derived from BVI photometry. The brightest F and G supergiants in the LMC occupy positions in the 42-45, 45-48 diagram similar to galactic Ia supergiants of similar luminosity; the somewhat less luminous long period LMC Cepheids lie between these and the Ib sequence.
