This dissertation is a compendium of observations and analysis of the galaxy Maffei 2, interesting because of its proximity to the Milky Way and its strong burst of nuclear star formation. We have observed the galaxy at many different wavelengths in an attempt to build up a consistent model for the dynamical processes driving the starburst. High resolution (13)CO (1-0) observations allow us to trace the density distribution of molecular gas in the nuclear starburst region with high fidelity. Single dish (12)CO (3-2) observations of the nucleus probe the physical conditions in the warmer denser molecular regions in the starburst. Near infrared observations allow us to penetrate the obscuring dust in the plane of the Milky Way to see the overall morphology of the galaxy. HI mapping of the galaxy reveals the kinematics of the disk, allowing us to see the mechanisms of gas flow. From our observations emerges a picture of Maffei 2 as a galaxy having been disrupted by a recent tidal interaction with another galaxy whose influence is responsible for driving the burst of nuclear star formation.
