It is shown that the Podgorny (1980) method of cometary magnetic field evaluation is not self-consistent, due to two assumptions which are in contradiction of the law that the component of magnetic field parallel to the axis of Comet Halley increases with the distance from the axis. The alternative method of Ershkovich (1978, 1979, 1980) is discussed, in which the maximum value of the magnetic field in the cometary environment is reached at the stagnation point.
