Aspects of rheology, numerical pathologies in computational fluid mechanics, and aspects of Soret convection such as isotope fractionation and roll-over are discussed. A review of the pathologies of numerical procedures employed in assessing mantle rheologies is provided so that the effects of viscous dissipation may be correctly discerned from numerical artifacts. The potential of Soret convection in the mantle leads to the possibility of isotope and chemical fractionation across core-mantle and mantle-crust boundaries; the isotope fractionation effect cannot be corrected by the usual corrections that attend mass spectroscopy.
