In conjunction with consideration of the lowest order corrections from relativistic quantum electrodynamics, a general expression of heat and momentum exchange in an optically thin gas due to Compton processes is derived. A discussion of the relevance of this expression to the phenomenon of astrophysical jets establishes that Comptonization may play an important role in energy balances when the Comptonization parameter y is much smaller than unity. In such cases, the equations of motion must be solved through the additional consideration of Compton heat exchange, treating it as an equivalent emissivity.
