Three-dimensional P velocity variations models for the earth's mantle were developed using the International Seismological Centre P arrival data for 1964-1987 and algorithms that minimize the l exp 1 and the l exp 2 norms of the travel time residuals. Model maps show spherical harmonic expansions up to degree and order 15 along with a weighting scheme based on an estimate of model resolution. This allows the most realistic presentation of what is known about lateral variations in the mantle velocity structure. It is shown that the model values and patterns for the top two layers correlate well with surface tectonics.
