The complex structure of the quasar 3C 345 makes it very difficult to describe unambiguously the relative motions of the components. The simplest interpretation is that the overall structure appears to have increased in size during the period 1974-1980 due to the separation of a low surface brightness region from a bright double core with an apparent angular velocity of about 0.3 mas per year. During this same period the separation of the core components has remained close to 1.3 mas. However, the possibility that the apparent increase in overall source dimensions is due to a brightening of the outer regions of the source rather than to real component motion cannot be ruled out.
