Most authors agree that the central object of SS 433 is a binary system, and that there are two oppositely directed relativistic jets emanating from this object. There is, however, no general agreement as to the nature of the components of the binary system. A description is presented of evidence that the observed spectrum is not that of a star but that of an accretion disk. A detailed analysis is conducted of the observed velocities in the system. Attention is given to the observations, profile and line strength variations, H-beta velocities, He 1 emission, and absorption velocities. It is found that the H-beta emission profile displays a 164 day phase variation which can be interpreted as originating in a thick precessing disk. The intensity of the He I emission and Fe II absorption varies in a manner consistent with origin in a precessing disk, with a slight phase lag with respect to a disk orthogonal to the jets.
