It is shown, by means of numerical calculations, that (1) thermal photon production at self-absorbed cyclotron higher harmonics, and (2) the Comptonization of such soft photons in a hot plasma at electron temperatures on the order of ten billion degrees K, together provide a natural mechanism that accounts for the dominant observed intensity and spectral features of active galactic nuclei X-ray emission. A hot plasma, deep within the accretion flows onto supermassive black holes, is proposed as the environment in which the neccessary conditions are most likely to be satisfied. The model presented is consistent with the rapid time variabilities observed in some of the X-ray consistent with the rapid time variabilities observed in some of the X-ray sources in question.
