The growth rate of the relativistic firehose instability as a function of the particle energy spectra is investigated near marginal instability. It is found that if cosmic rays are accelerated impulsively in limited regions, with initially flat spectra, the sudden increase in the firehose growth rate could lead to release of the particles when the spectrum has steepened beyond exponent 2.5.
