Photoelectric UBV lightcurves of the CMEU-type asteroid 201 Penelope are presented. A rapid spin rate of 3.7474 plus or minus 0.0001 h, and a large amplitude of about 0.56 mag, which is not observed to change with phase angle, are found. The rotational properties place the asteroid in the LASPA class, having a possible origin from catastrophic impact, with shape relaxing in triaxial equilibrium ellipsoids. The absence of significant color variation indicates that the 0.12 mag difference between the two lightcurve maxima of Penelope is due to a somewhat irregular shape rather than surface variation.
