Stars which have not destroyed their deuterium during the convective contraction phase will reach the main sequence with the D/H ratio of the interstellar material out of which they were formed. By establishing a low upper limit for the D/H ratio, the initial D/H ratio, as modified by stellar evolution, can be deduced. From observations of H-alpha in Canopus, F0 Ib, an upper limit for deuterium abundance has been obtained: N(D)/N(H) equals 0.000009. This upper limit is comparable to the ratio observed in the interstellar medium, and is less than the upper end of the spread of interstellar deuterium values. Possible explanations of this result are discussed, including (1) mass loss during H-core burning, (2) meridional circulation, and (3) convection in the red supergiant phase.
