The seventh magnitude K1 IV-V star HD 36705 was detected with the Einstein Observatory to be a flaring X-ray source. HD 36705 is the brightest star (m/v/=6.8) in the 1 minute error circle within 30 seconds from the nominal X-ray position. Subsequent optical photometry, carried out in February, April, and October, 1980, revealed a migrating wave with a period of 0.514 days, and the time of minimum light as JD 2444296.6. HD 36705 bears many of the signatures typical of X-ray emitting active stars of the RS SVn and related short period group. Spectral types K1 III (Houk and Cowley, 1975) and K2 IV (Bidelman and MacConnell, 1973) have been assigned to HD 36705; the B-V color index of 0.80 is consistent with a K0 V to G5 III classification obtained by Schmidt-Kaler (1965).
