A new empirical criterion for hierarchical stability of triple systems is derived, and its reliability with respect to triples with different orbital eccentricities, inclinations, and relative phases is justified. An application of the proposed criterion for the study of observed triple stars and triple systems formed within clusters of stars is discussed.
