It is shown that a new type of particle which may have been seen in a recent accelerator experiment may, if truly present, provide a mechanism whereby gravitationally collapsing massive stars may eject their outer mantles and envelopes in supernova explosions of about 10 to the 51st ergs while leaving the cores to form neutron star remnants. These particles are 'axion-like,' which means they interact semiweakly, decay to two photons with lifetimes of about 0.001 s, and have masses between 0.15 and 1 MeV. It is hoped that future accelerator searches will be able to confirm or deny the existence of these particles, the presence of which would cause a dramatic solution to the long-standing gravitational-collapse supernova problem.
