The composition of the interstellar matter around the bright young variable shell star HR 5999 has been studied by comparing spectrograms taken near minimum light, when the increase in circumstellar dust extinction amounted to about 1.5 mag in the V band, with similar spectra taken at maximum. The atomic absorption and emission line spectrum of the gas component of the shell increases in strength at minimum together with the dust extinction, but no spectral features due to molecules can be detected. In particular, an upper limit of 80 m A is determined for the circumstellar contribution to the diffuse absorption band at wavelength 4428 A at minimum light, against an expected equivalent width of 1.3 A for a similar amount of visual extinction by normal interstellar dust. It is concluded that the dust associated with HR 5999 is different in nature and apparently does not carry the constituent(s) producing the interstellar diffuse absorption bands.
