Photoelectric and spectrographic observations of the nucleus of a number of Shapley-Ames galaxies are presented. They show that the reddening of the stellar continuum, the balmer decrement and the equivalent width of the Na D line are closely correlated. The D line equivalent width is much larger than the one observed in galactic stars having the same reddening; one possible explanation is that the gas in the nuclear region of galaxies is sodium rich as it has been shown to be the case for the stars in the central regions of most elliptical galaxies.
