We propose Snapshot imaging of subarcsecond structures in the centers of nearby active galaxies. Many of HST's major discoveries have come from just such imaging: including circumnuclear dust rings and disks (NGC 4261, M51), optical jets (NGC 3862), bright blue star clusters (NGC 1275), and stellar cusps (M87). These images can also detect fine structures from collisions/mergers, triaxiality, bars, biconical outflows/jets, and other interactions of the nucleus and its environment. HST's unparalleled post- COSTAR resolution of 0.1" corresponds to 40 pc at z=0.02 (H=75). This gives desired times for full white-light exposures (200--500 secs) which are well-matched to the typical integrations available in schedule gaps. The 400 targets--nearby Seyfert galaxies, LINERs and radiogalaxies at z<0.03-- are distributed around the sky. All observed targets will also be imaged from the ground at optical and radio wavelengths. Our program complements other work which will determine what small-scale structures are found in NORMAL galaxies. The Snapshot images (which we intend to release early) will also help future observers to identify the best location(s) for follow-up FOS spectroscopy (eg., for dynamical measurements of mass). These Snapshots offer the real probability of new discoveries about the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and interstellar matter in active galactic nuclei.
