The discovery by Franx and Illingworth of a kinematically-distinct stellar core in the nucleus of the giant radio elliptical IC 1459, and the confirmation that such components are quite common, has added a valuable diagnostic tool for understanding the structure and the formation of ellipticals. These cores are substantial (10**10 solar masses for IC 1459) and offer a valuable and unique diagnostic of the dynamical state of the nuclei of ellipticals. Further study will address their formation by investigating whether these cores could be the end result of a `starburst' event, or from the capture of a stellar companion, or even the merging of primordial subclumps. Here we propose to take advantage of the high resolution imaging of the PC to image the 16 galaxies with known kinematically distinct cores from our magnitude limited sample of 77 ellipticals. The focus of the program is the detection of stellar disks (as suggested by the spectroscopic line profile analysis) and color differences between the core region and the rest of the galaxy. If the cores have been affected by accretion of stars or gas, and star formation, then such differences are naturally expected. This program also allows us to identify the color of any jets or shells and map the dust at small radii. These data are an essential complement to our extensive ground-based spectroscopic and imaging survey.
