We propose to obtain images at the highest possible resolution of a sample of normal galaxies at moderately high redshift that have been spectroscopically identified in a major ground- based survey program. Our HST program is aimed at PC observations of half a dozen galaxies at 0.6 < z < 0.8 and WFC observations of over 100 spectroscopically identified sources with I(AB) < 22.5 and with 0 < z < 1.2. The unique capabilities of HST will enable us to (a) determine bulge-to-disk ratios, (b) measure bulge and disk scale lengths and surface brightnesses, (c) identify compact companions and other evidence for interactions and mergers, and (d) detect structure such as spiral arms within disks so as to determine the nature of star-formation within normal high redshift galaxies. This will lead to an understanding of the evolution of the different morphological components in galaxies and, thus, an understanding of those physical process that have operated within and around typical galaxies and which have controlled their evolution since the time when the Universe was less than half of its present age.
