The structure and stability of a steady thermal field in molecular gas is analyzed. The gas is assumed to be heated by cosmic rays and grain photelectron heating, cooled by a schematized cooling rate approx. = exp(-alpha/T), and with heat diffusion by neutral particles. The range of values of the parameters characterized the above energy transport mechanisms for which slablike, cylindrical, and spherical structures are thermally stable are determined. The linear stability of the thermal equilibrium states was carried out analytically. The stability of structures in nonthermal equilibrium which are studied numerically is inferred from the analytical study of the trivial solution. For slablike configuratiuons initially in thermal equilibrium,, a nonlinear stability analysis was done. In particular, the Landau constant was calculated; the values for the saturated amplitude, and the threshold value, for supercritical stability, and subcritical instability, respectively, were also obtained. The relevance of the above physical mechanisms in the formation of thermal structures in the interstellar medium is outlined.
