Scientific paper
The goal of this WF/PC project is to extend our knowledge of the bulge population by photometry of faint stars in two areas where interstellar obscuration is minimal. One area (Baade's Window) is about 4 degrees from the Galactic nucleus and the other is 8 degrees from the nucleus. We seek the mean age of the stellar population and the initial mass function. Stars inhabiting the central bulge of the Milky Way include many that are much more metal-rich than those in the solar neighborhood. The bulge population, whose integrated light resembles that of elliptical galaxies, is 100 times closer than any other sample. Even so, extreme crowding makes the bulge difficult to investi- gate with groundbased telescopes.
