This talk will report on a workshop on graduate education held in June, 1995 under the sponsorship of the MPS Directorate of the National Science Foundation. The workshop included representatives from academia, industry, professional societies, national laboratories and government agencies, who were tasked to examine current strategies for graduate training and to suggest areas for potential change. Despite the wide diversity of institutional backgrounds, the particpants reached consensus on a set of areas where change was desirable and where funding agencies might exert leadership.
