We report preliminary results of HST observations of NGC 4414, including the discovery of Cepheid variable stars, as part of the HST Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale. NGC 4414 is one of the most distant galaxies in the Key Project. As the host galaxy of SN 1974G, it is a potential calibrator of the type Ia supernova secondary distance indicator, and through its membership in the Coma I group, the Tully-Fisher, planetary nebula luminosity function, and surface brightness fluctuation methods. Observations were obtained in April through June 1995 for twelve epochs in V (F555W), four in I (F814W), and two in B (F439W) with the WFPC2 camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. Preliminary light curves will be presented for a representative sample of Cepheids. The general stellar population in the galaxy will also be discussed.
