It is generally believed that strongly active galaxies such as Quasars and Seyferts are powered by a central black-hole surrounded by an accretion disc giving rise to energy output far above that expected from stellar processes. These are the objects I shall call AGN (Active Galactic Nuclei). AGN are also not a homogeneous class of objects and the nomenclature is somewhat complicated in order to account for the wide range of observed properties (changing appearance depending on external factors such as viewing angle, presence of dust, luminosity of the surrounding galaxy etc...).
