To a first approximation, every star is an M dwarf - but there are still
considerable gaps in our understanding of these stars, particularly in
the space density of the lowest mass stars. Fortunately, the 2
micrometer sky surveys are likely to change this state of affairs. In
this paper, I review briefly the likely impact of these surveys.
