A neutral radiation of ultrahigh energy levels is projected to be detectable on earth if such compact regions of the Galaxy as accreting degenerate binary stars are sites of particle acceleration. More than 50 ground-based experiments are currently concerned with the detection of these faint, but energetic, signals. While several source-detections have been claimed, unanticipated and puzzling features of the signals must be clarified prior to systematic investigation. Attention is given to the implications of the phenomena in question for both astrophysics and particle physics.
