The observational objectives of the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) are discussed. These include: Galactic gamma-ray sources; cosmic gamma-ray bursts; diffuse continuum emission from the interstellar medium of the Galaxy; gamma-line emission from Galactic and extragalactic objects; external galaxies, especially the cores of active galaxies; diffuse cosmic gamma-ray background emission; and the sun.
