A first version of the Catalogue of the Components of Double and Multiple Stars (CCDM) was used for the preparation of the Hipparcos Input Catalogue. A new version of the CCDM is currently being prepared into which those results from the Hipparcos space mission related to double and multiple systems are being introduced. However, a number of problems associated with this task have arisen in connection with the use of the final Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues. The aim of this paper is to warn users of these catalogues about certain inconsistencies with regard to the data relating to double and multiple stars, and to help them make the best and most efficient use of these important publications in a field fraught with difficulties of nomenclature.
