The digitisation of astronomical plate archives, novel software and powerful computers allow data mining in extended plate databases for the first time. We refer on the project of searches for and analysis of supermassive binary black holes (binary blazars) requiring very long time intervals (50 years and more) which cannot be provided by other data sources.
