Bi has been estimated spectrochemically in 29 specimens of gadolinite; it varies from 12 to 262 ppm and averages at 63 ppm. The presence of distinct traces of Bi in gadolinite is evidently due to the ability of Bi 3+ to replace rare earth cations in the gadolinite structure. Some approximate observations have also been made on the Bi concentration in other rare earth minerals and in apatite.
