Studies of star forming regions tend to focus on particular facets of star formation, and relatively few efforts have been made toward understanding the relationships among the diverse phenomena observed in molecular clouds. New state-of-the-art observations combined with past studies can be used to construct a coherent description of star formation in the Taurus dark cloud L1551. The pre-main sequence population suggests that L1551 has been a productive cloud for much longer than its present day dynamical timescale, while the discovery of a pre-protostellar core is evidence that its productivity continues. Future analyses of high-resolution, fully sampled CO isotopologue maps of L1551 will give insight into the stellar feedback and turbulent support in the cloud, critical elements to the understanding of star formation in the region.
