New Results will be presented of opacity calculations relevant to the modeling of brown dwarfs and giant planets. This will include new Rosseland mean opacities for a range of temperatures and pressures, and a report on progress being made in the theoretical prediction of the spectrum of methane. These results will demonstrate how the current uncertainties in the opacities due to the alkali atoms play an important role in the interpretation of the models and of the observations. Other problem areas in the generation of reliable opacities will also be addressed. Plans for the generation of a larger grid of Rosseland and Planck mean opacities will be discussed. This research was supported by a grant from the Nasa Planetary Atmospheres Program.
