The launch of the Chandra X-ray Observatory in July 1999 opened a new era in X-ray astronomy. Its unprecedented, <1" spatial resolution and low background is providing views of the X-ray sky 10-100 times deeper than previously possible. We are carrying out a serendipitous survey of the X-ray sky, the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP), using archival data to flux limits covering the range between those reached by previous satellites and those of the small area Chandra deep surveys. The survey covers about 14 sq.deg. of sky to X-ray fluxes (2-10 keV) in the range 10-13}-6{-16 erg cm2 s-1 and will include ~4000 sources, ~ 70% of which are expected to be active galactic nuclei (AGN). Optical imaging of the ChaMP fields is underway at NOAO and SAO telescopes using g', r', i' filters to a flux limit matched to the X-ray such that >75% of the X-ray sources will be optically identified. The optical photometry will also allow us to classify the X-ray sources into object types and, in some cases, estimate their redshifts. Optical spectroscopy of a well-defined subset of ~ 25% of the sources is underway using multi-object spectrographs at NOAO-WIYN, CTIO and the MMT. This sample provides population statistics, facilitates determination of luminosity functions and evolution of the various source types and allows for confirmation of classification and redshifts determined from photometry alone. We plan for radio and near-IR observations of subsets of the ChaMP sample to expland our multi-wavelength coverage and increase the fraction of sources identified. ChaMP will provide both a major resource for Chandra observers and a key research tool for the study of the cosmic X-ray background and the individual source populations which comprise it. Source catalogs and images will be placed in the ChaMP public archive within a year of the completion of our data analysis.
