Previous workers have reported Th 232 concentrations in surface sea water ranging from 0.3 to 0.6 g/1000 1. Whereas these estimates were based on the analysis of single samples, the present work is based on a composite of 24 analyses of water collected from widely spaced parts of the ocean. A careful interpretation of the alpha spectrometer data indicates that the true concentration is less than 0.07 g Th 232 /1000 1.
