We present the main results from the one megasecond observation of the Chandra Deep Field South. Using a catalog of 350 sources, we discuss the statistical X-ray properties of the source population and compare our source number counts with other deep Chandra fields. This analysis shows that the X-ray background is almost completely resolved in individual sources, with some evidence however that there is still a not negligible population of faint hard sources to be discovered at energies not well probed by Chandra. We will also present deep optical and near-IR imaging observations which were carried out with the VLT to identify these sources. We use optical redshifts and identifications for approximately half the sample to characterize the combined optical and X-ray properties of the CDFS sources, which shed light on the nature of the AGN population as well as their host galaxies. This work was partially supported by NASA grants NAG-8-1527 and NAG-8-1133.
