The Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) has returned a vast amount of high quality spectra of the Jovian atmosphere during its fly-by of Jupiter from October 2000 to March 2001. These spectra have been recorded from 10 to 1400 cm-1 at spectral resolutions between 0.5 and 20 cm-1, and at a wide range of spatial resolutions. The analysis of such a large set of data ideally requires automated retrieval methods. Here we present an overview of an optimal estimation retrieval model which has been successfully used to extract temperature, composition and cloud opacity from the CIRS data. The CIRS spectra themselves are simulated using the method of correlated-k. The retrieval model has been validated with test spectra for a wide range of atmospheric conditions and comparison tests with collaborating groups is ongoing. Retrieved zonal plots of temperature, ammonia, phosphine, haze and other minor constituents will be presented. Retrieved maps of some of these products will be presented by an accompanying paper (Parrish et al., this session).
