A simplified equation describing nonlinear long waves and zonal flows in a rotating atmosphere is derived. It has soliton solutions corresponding to the stationary smooth vortices in a sheared zonal flow. The parameters of solitons are uniquely determined by the parameters of the zonal flow. The solutions are compared with the Great Red Spot of Jupiter and its laboratory simulations.
