The observation that the specific globular cluster frequency is unusually high in both M87 (Virgo) and in NGC 3311 (Hydra I) suggests that the central galaxies in rich clusters were already very special at an early stage in the evolution of their parent clusters. This suspicion is strengthened by the observation that elongated first-ranked galaxies exhibit a strong tendency to line up with the major axis of the cluster in which they are located.
