Compact groups (CGs) of galaxies --- relatively poor groups of galaxies in which the typical separations between members is of the order of a galaxy diameter --- offer an exceptional laboratory for the study of dense galaxian environments with short (< 1 Gyr) dynamical timescales. We are studying methods for extracting an objectively defined catalog of CGs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Early Data Release down to a limiting galaxy magnitude of r*=21. As a first attempt, we have examined Hickson's (1982) criteria for finding CGs on over 200 deg2 of SDSS commissioning data down to a magnitude of r*=21. Modifications to the criteria were examined in order to reduce the rate of chance alignments. For the final catalog, redshifts and colors of group members are compared to a similarly selected catalog of field galaxies.
