Counterarguments to the notion of a bouncing Universe are presented. It is shown that entropy considerations imply that a quantity derived within the framework of the Robertson-Walker Universe must decrease by a factor of about 10 to the 75th to allow the present Universe to bounce, while this quantity can in fact decrease by no more than a factor of about two. It is further shown that if the true vacuum state has zero energy density, then a Universe which is contracting in its low temperature phase can never complete a phase transition soon enough to cause a bounce. A reply to these arguments is presented which emphasizes that thermal equilibrium cannot be maintained during a universal phase change and that it is not clear that the temperature must have remained above the critical temperature. It is argued that a bounce is possible when various thermodynamic assumptions are changed.
