The authors fit blackbody and pseudoblackbody functions to infrared photometry for the classical novae NQ Vul, V1668 Cyg and LW Ser, in an attempt to understand the nature of their dust shells. Neither grain growth nor pre-existing grain models, in their original forms, account for the infrared development entirely satisfactorily. A variant of the former is suggested, in which the behaviour of the 'infrared photosphere' mimics that of the underlying pseudophotosphere.
