Strontium and neodymium isotopic data on basalts from the Columbia River province are consistent with an unfractionated source for the magmas, and do not necessarily indicate large amounts of crustal contamination. This conclusion is based on the observation that 1. (1) the Nd values of 99% of the basalts are positive and sharply bounded at Nd = 0, 2. (2) the trace element patterns can be modelled without crustal assimilation, 3. (3) there is no associated rhyolitic volcanism, and 4. (4) the isotopic ratios correlate with geographic position as well as chemical composition.
