In this talk, we present a review of theory of planet formation. We present the two main planet formation models, namely core-accretion and gravitaional instability. In a second part, we will focus on population synthesis models based on extended core-accretion planet formation models We will show that in these population synthesis models are able to reproduce some of the observations related to the Solar System and to extrasolar planets. Finaly, in a last part, we will present the present day incompletness and uncertainties of these models.
