A classification of close binary systems is presented and analytic expressions are derived that fully describe the evolution of both the normal and the neutron star of such a system. Inventories of neutron and normal star states are presented and combined into a classification system by a given method. Analytic descriptions of the accretion regime and rate, the equation of neutron-star evolution, critical spin periods, and normal star evolution are obtained.
