Twenty spectrograms of Capella were recorded with the 48-inch Crimean telescope in 1980 and 1982 at 20-A/mm dispersion on high-sensitivity infrachromatic film. The 10830 A chromospheric absorption line of He I had an equivalent width W(He) = 0.96, 0.69 A in the two years, whereas the width of the 10827-A Si I photospheric line remained unchanged. Taken together with the authors' W(He) determinations from a 1973 low-dispersion image-tube spectrogram and a 1981 spectrum obtained with the 2.6-m telescope, as well as Zirin's 1968-1975 observations, these findings suggest that the outer atmosphere of Alpha Aur B is undergoing cyclic variations with a period of about 10 yr. The He I, II emission mechanism is analyzed. The He emission zone in the Capella chromosphere has the large emission measure EM = about 10 to the 31st/cm to the -5th.
