High-resolution echelle spectra have been obtained of H-alpha and Ca II K in main-sequence stars ranging from spectral type G2 to K5, including the integrated quiet sun. These stars display a variety of Ca II K emission strengths, indicative of different degrees of chromospheric activity. It is found that, among stars of similar spectral types, the central residual flux of H-alpha absorption increases with the strength of Ca II K emission. This result suggests that the H-alpha core may provide a viable diagnostic of chromospheric activity, such as the Ca II K emission has proved to be in past studies.
