It is proposed that certain random quantities, namely the visible geometrical characteristics of a group of objects, be used to assess the reality of, and to investigate, groups of objects observed in the Galactic and Metagalactic fields. This method is used to study stellar rings in Orion and Aquila, and it is concluded that the Orion ring is real while the Aquila ring may be an illusion.
