The H II region W33 is characterized at radio frequencies by an extended emission complex as well as a compact core G12.8-0.2 which is centrally located with respect to the extended emission. The present investigation of W33 forms part of a program which has the objective to study extended H II regions that show possible signs of younger or less massive star formation. The investigation is concerned with the formation of OB clusters and the distribution of spectral types in the vicinity of high-mass stars. High angular resolution synthesis maps are made at several frequencies in order to detect compact components which were unresolved in previous lower resolution studies. Attention is also given to the NH3 emission from this region which delineates the higher density and more massive component of the local cloud environment. It is found that numerous arguments together argue convincingly for the interpretation that W33 Main represent the formation of a young cluster of OB stars.
