We present global VLBI results on the ~ 8100 km s-1 HI absorption feature detected toward the strong radio source 3C84 (NGC 1275) in the Perseus cluster (Vsys ~ 5200 km s-1). The observation was performed using the VLBA, the phased VLA and three antennas of the European VLBI Network (EVN). Our results provide the first high dynamic range image of this feature at high spatial resolution. We detect at least four distinct absorption peaks with optical depths ranging from 0.06 to 0.3. The compactness of the background radio source 3C84, which has a linear extension of only about 8 pc (1 mas = 0.33 pc), limits the conclusions that can be drawn as to the nature of the intervening object falling toward the center of the Perseus cluster at ~ 3000 km s-1. However, the detected absorption peaks indicate the existence of several HI clouds with velocity differences very similar to those seen in galactic neutral hydrogen absorption. The observed HI clouds extend from 8 to 12 mas on the plane of the sky. The derived HI column densities, assuming Ts=100 K, range from (0.15-3.3)x 1020 cm-2, and the implied volume densities range between 1.2 to 42 cm-3.
